The relation to nature, its forces and creations was different in earlier times. Nature was perceived intuitively, observed and used. In our urbanized and mechanized time "nature" as such is not anymore natural for everybody.

Therefore the cow patty stands as a symbol for the free nature and its course. It is a small universe. Used as breeding ground by other animals when still fresh it stands for the variety of life.  As soon as it dries up the insects leave again and the cow patty slowly starts to rot. Thus it stands also for the transitoriness of things in general. In the end, lying on alpine grassland it remains mostly unnoticed by people, although it is omnipresent there.

Today our senses must process myriads of information in a sensory overloaded world. Therefore it is obvious that something, even if it is nature, must fall by the wayside. The cow patty and its unnoticed existence embodies this deficiency. The involvement with it becomes thus an act of humbleness towards nature.

There we have come full circle with the Far Eastern feng shui, because the purpose of this teaching is the harmonization of men with their surroundings (also see “Why it is called "fengtirolis"?).
